William Airy was born in Augusta Co, VA abt 1767. William's birthdate is calculated based upon his marriage date when he was at least twenty-one years of age. William died Mar 1839 in Silver Creek, Greene Co, OH, at 71 years of age. Administration of William Ary's estate by Charles and William Ary was settled December 9, 1841 in Green County Court, Ohio. He married Mary Stowers in Orange Co, VA, 16 Aug 1788. Mary was born in Orange Co, VA 1765. Mary died aft Aug 1857. William Airy was raised on the family homestead on the Shenandoah River. When his father died, in 1781, he was fourteen year old. As was the custom, William was bound out to John Harnsberger. Harnsberger came from Spotsylvania County. which was established by Gov Spotswood for German immigrants to establish iron furnaces. The place was called Germana and is now in Madison County. William met Mary Stowers who was probably from Orange County where they may have lived following their marriage. Virginia census records for 1800 are not available, but in 1810 he appeared on the Rockingham County Census near his sons, Charles and George, and his brother, George. William had seven children living at home and he was at least forty-five years old at the time of that census. William Ary lived in Ohio for some twenty-five years and was successful in establishing a comfortable home for his family. He died intestate and his personal effects were sold at auction for more than $400. Most of the farm implements and animals were purchased by his sons and sons-in-law. Personal effects included such items as a vest, a coat, a fur hat and the family bible which was purchased by the husband of his oldest daughter.
