Jacob Reed was born in Harrison County, Virginia, March 14, 1807. He came to Champaign County, Ohio, in 1825, and August 14, 1828, married Elizabeth Cameron, who was born in Pennsylvania in March 1809. In the fall of 1829, he came to this township and built himself a cabin about one and a half miles south of Essex (Union County), on what is now known as the W. W. Smith place. While thus engaged, he voted at the first election held in Jackson Township. Returning to Champaign County, he moved his family in the spring of 1830 to his new home, and there engaged in the arduous labors of a pioneer. His wife died in 1835. After following farming for a short time, Mr. Reed became a storekeeper at Essex. He sold out his store, and in 1851 emigrated to Mahaska County, Iowa, where he died in the spring of 1880."
