Bob enlisted while living in North Madison and was born in Ohio.


Bob graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1963, enlisted in the Navy right out of school and served for six years before he was killed in a helicopter crash September 15, 1969 while serving as helicopter door gunner with Navy Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three - HA(L)-3.

On September 15, 1969, a U.S. Navy helicopter UH-1B (tail number 63-12931) from Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three [HA(L)-3] "Seawolves," crashed during a night scramble off the USS Harnett County in a rain squall in the Gulf of Thailand. The two crewmen aboard, AT1 Robert J. Arnold and ATN Stephen A. Johnson, were killed in the incident. The two pilots survived.
