Joseph was an Exeter, NH merchant and gundalow (flat bottom cargo vessel) operator. Several sailed from the site where Swasey Parkway is now and hauled lumber, paper, furniture and leather goods to Portsmouth on the ebb time and returned on the rising tide with molasses, lime, fish, candles and rum. He apprenticed with Thomas Drowne of Newfields where he learned the trades of tanner, shoemaker and currier.
He enlisted as lieutenant in the company of Capt. Peter Hersey of Newfields. He was discharged Sept 27, 1814. In 1817, he moved to Exeter, selling his tanning and currying business in Newfields to Charles Lane.
He carried on trading in Exeter with Col. John Rogers. Joseph married Nancy Smart, who died at age 30 in 1805, he then married Dorothy Smart, who died age 24 in 1811 and lastly married Mehitable Smart, all were sisters, the daughters of Josiah Smart. Joseph had 15 children.
In all his dealings, he was said to be above reproach for fidelity, integrity, and strict honesty. He was also said to be manly, enterprising, public spirited, and charitable.
Joseph was said to be above reproach and lived a upright life and died a Christian death.
