Benjamin is not buried here. His burial location is unknown but believed to be in Kentucky. In the Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery there is a monument placed by the DAR, listing soldiers from the Lebanon area of Laurens County, South Carolina that fought in the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Kilgore's name is listed fourth on the monument.


Capt. in Command of his own the regiment under General Braumon in the Revolutionary War.

State of South Carolina to Benjamin Kilgore 1780 May 27th To Captain's pay from March 6, 1779 to this day in Col. Williams' Regiment, 96th Dist. having been on duty the whole of that time as horseman 432 days.

Sept. 27 to ditto from May 27, 1780 when kept a prisoner and sent to Charleston and there kept until made his escape and returned home--Signed Robert M. Craig, Lieut. Col. To Capt Benjamin Kilgore

Abbeville Dist SC issued the 26th day of Jan. 1786 to Capt. Benjamin Kilgore for 200 and 78 lb sterling for militia duty in 1779-1780 as per account............

Benjamin Kilgore was born between 1738-1740 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. To date there is no proven date of his birth. He was the son of James Kilgore and Elizabeth Jack. In the early 1760's Benjamin left Pennsylvania and later settled in Laurens County, South Carolina. He settled on granted lands in the Duncan's Creek area of Laurens County, South Carolina. While serving as a Captain in the Revolutionary War, Benjamin was taken prisoner. He made his escape from Charleston. He was headed home when he learned his superior fell in action and he commanded the regiment as Colonel. Benjamin was first married to Anna McCreary, who was scalped by the Indians in 1766 while horseback riding with her infant son. Her infant son survived the attack. That son, James Kilgore, was their only child. Benjamin then married Jane Ann Martha McDavid. Benjamin and Jane had twelve children. Near the end of his life, Benjamin Kilgore and his wife, Jane, moved to Livingston, Kentucky with some of their grown children between 1799 and 1802 where he died. His Last Will and Testament was signed by him on March 22, 1802 and was probated September 6, 1802 in Kentucky. His burial place is not known.
