Sarah, the third child of Samuel and Kiziah (FLATER) CHANEY, was born in Richland Township, Greene County, on November 10, 1853, and peacefully passed away at 5:30 o'clock on the morning of July 12, 1929, at the family home in Taylor Township, near the place of her birth, at the age of seventy-five years, eight months and two days. She had been in failing health for about three years, yet her last sickness was but a few days duration and her death came as a shock to her many friends and also to her family. Her early childhood was spent on the farm where she was born and she helped to endure the hardships of the pioneer days. In childhood and young womanhood she took an active part in all church services at the Mt. Zion Church, North Mineral, and she was always interested in church work. On September 17, 1874, she was united in marriage to Edward HASLER, and to this union ten children were born. The oldest died in infancy. Most of her married life was spent in the vicinity of Rockwood, where she reared her family. After the marriage of their last child, they purchased her childhood homestead where she spent her remaining years. She was a quiet, unassuming woman and lived for her home and family. The stranger was always welcome within her gates. She was a great lover of the beautiful and her home was surrounded by shrubbery and flowers. Besides her aged companion she leaves to mourn the loss of a dear mother, six daughters and three sons, namely: Mrs. Lulu SMITH, of Chrisman, Illinois; Mrs. Cora COMBS, of Rockwood; Mrs. Lessie REED, of Switz City; Mrs. Pearl DOWDEN, and Mrs. Docie SUMMERVILLE, of Scotland; Mrs. Ida WRIGHT, of Allen Chapel; Verl HASLER, of Bloomfield; Lester and Vactor HASLER, of near Park. She also leaves four brothers, Samuel CHANEY, of Hyattsville, Kansas; Link CHANEY, of Coal City; Charles CHANEY, of BLOOMFIELD, an Ed CHANEY; also thirty-one grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. She is not dead, but just gone before. The funeral services were held in the FLATER Cemetery, Sunday afternoon, July 14, at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. J. N. A. DOWNEY. Interment in the FLATER Cemetery, nearby the graves of her father and mother and other members of her family.
