Almeda Huntsman, daughter of Mary (née Painter) and Jeremiah Huntsman, was born in 1855 in Ohio's Morrow County in either Congress or Franklin Township. The Huntsman family, who farmed, moved in 1864 to Green Township, Noble County, Indiana.
Almeda Huntsman and David M. Masten, a farmer, married on 30 November 1873 in Noble County. The couple were the parents of seven children, only three of whom survived their mother: Clarence Henry, Inez Belle, and Golda.
