Cornelius J. Ladner, an attorney, died October 14, 2003 in Hattiesburg, MS. He was born December 5, 1919 in Vidalia, MS and has been a resident of Bay St. Louis, MS since 1938. He was a graduate of St. Stanislaus College, in Bay St. Louis, MS, Pearl River Junior College in Poplarville, MS and the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS where in 1948 he received his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Between college and law school he was a schoolteacher in Dedeaux, MS and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific, where he was wounded. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1943, he worked as a timekeeper at the shipyards in New Orleans before entering Ole Miss Law School, in 1947 he was elected to the Mississippi State Senate and served from 1948 to 1952 the Fortieth Senate District, which then included portions of Hancock, Pearl River and Lamar Counties. In 1948 he opened his law office and practiced law in Bay St. Louis for nearly 45 years. He was active in the community and, among other things, was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Roman Catholic Church, a member of the Mississippi Bar, a lifetime member of the American Legion, a Past-President of Hancock General Hospital Board of Trustees and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He practiced before each of the federal and state courts in Mississippi, as well as the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvest Ladner and Mary Octavia Koenenn Ladner, by one daughter, Mary Bridgette Ladner, and by his brothers and sisters, Charles Ladner, Vester Ladner, Lester Ladner, Hilda Ladner Wilson, Pauline Ladner Redding and Ella Ladner Shaw. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bonnelle Price Ladner of Bay St. Louis; and by four children, Stanford Giles Ladner of Garden City, NY, Cornell A. Ladner of Bartlett, IL, Kathi Denise Ladner of Washington, DC and Desmond Cyril Ladner of Gulfport, MS. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sheri Grace Ladner and Andrew Joseph Ladner, both of Gulfport, MS and Elizabeth Bonnelle Ladner and James Stanford Ladner, both of Garden City, NY and by two daughters-in-law, Sandra Throop Ladner of Garden City, NY, and Betty Bevilacqua Ladner of Bartlett, IL. Evening visitation will be Thursday, October 16th at 7:00PM to 9:00PM at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home, 110 South Necaise Avenue, Bay St. Louis. A service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday October 17th at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Bay St. Louis, where friends may call an hour before service time. Burial will follow at Rotten Bayou Cemetery in Hancock County, MS. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS is in charge of the arrangements
