George B. Bourne Is Taken By Death. Body Will Be Brought to Havre for Burial
George B. Bourne, president of the Hill County State Bank of Havre, died at Rochester, Minn., shortly before noon, Wednesday. Feb. 25, after an illness which has become very serious after his arrival at Rochester only a week previous. The word of his death came as a shock to his many friends in Havre who had thought that he might recover. His wife and only son, Edelin Bourne, were with him at the time of his death and during his last illness. James Hamilton, his partner since their earliest days in Montana, from the ranch in Sweet Grass Hills, was also with him. The body of Mr. Bourne will be brought here Friday morning, Feb. 27, on No. 3, accompanied by his wife and son and Mr. Hamilton.
Mr. Bourne had been in poor health all fall and winter, but not even his closest associates realized the seriousness of his condition when he finally went to Rochester a week ago Monday. In Havre he had not been steadily confined to bed, and was usually able to go on the walks which he took daily to improve his health. However, his condition failing to show any improvement, he decided to go to Rochester for examination, becoming very ill shortly after his arrival.
George B. Bourne had come to Montana from the far east, being born in Wight county, Virginia, on Oct. 25, 1868. He first came to Montana over 40 years ago, and engaged with James Hamilton, still his partner, in the livestock business in the Sun river country. About 1894 they moved to the Sweet Grass Hills and engaged in the sheep business at the old Bourne-Hamilton ranch.
Mr. Bourne engaged in the banking business at Livingston with W.G. Conrad for a year, coming to the Security State Bank in Havre about 1914. When the Hill County State Bank was started in 1924 he became its president and has been its head ever since. Mr. Bourne's interests were not confined to livestock or banking, for he served as senator from old Chouteau county about 1903, for one term, during which he displayed great ability. He also served in the state assembly in 1897 as a member of the house from Chouteau county.
His friendship and acquaintance was extensive among all classes of people. Familiar with all the details of the early days of north central Montana country he had many memories of the days which were filled with the romance of Indians, soldiers, traders and the early stockmen.
Mr. Bourne was married about 1902, bringing his wife from Washington to his ranch in the Sweet Grass Hills. They have only one son, Edelin Bourne, who is married and lives in the east.
