The son of Samuel & Mary (Lowe) Arnold, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Franklin Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg July 13, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 20 as a private with Co. G, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.

He married Elizabeth Dentler October 22, 1867, in Dillsburg, York County, and fathered Amos (b. 09/27/68), William Henry (b. 08/06/71), and Charles (b. 08/28/82). Cause of death is listed as "gangrene of left foot" with "erysipelas" a contributing factor.
