Husband of Rebecca E. Klunk Niedererr. The son of German-born Peter & Maria (Gaertler or Gardener) Neiderer, in 1860 he was a clerk presumably living in Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although that portion of the census does not exist. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 25, 1861, as a private with Co. F, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861. He also enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for his brother Jacob (not drafted as his obituary claims), mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.

He married Rebecca Elizabeth Klunk November 6, 1867, and fathered Mary Magdalena "Mame" (b. 12/31/68 - married Joseph Gruninger and William Jacob Hemler), Caroline Elizabeth (b. 1870), Alverta Catherine (b. 04/27/72 - married Weldon Jacob Hemler), Joseph Henry (b. 02/21/74), William Louis (b. 02/22/76), Sarah Anna (b. @1878), Anna Mae (b. 10/24/81 - married Felix Vincent Topper), Augustus Ignatius (b. 10/15/83), and Frances Debra (b. @1886). Rebecca died in 1901, and he married widow Julia A. Gallagher May 6, 1906. Cause of death is listed as "valvular disease of the heart and Bright's disease" leading to "uremia."

The spelling of the family surname often began "Nie" and the accompanying obituary adds an unnecessary "r" to the end of his name. The year 1841 is sometimes reported for his birth.
