Leslie Ray Lane, 79, of 362 Cartwright Swamp Road, Hertford and formerly of 557 Meadstown Road, Elizabeth City, died Monday, July 2, 2012 at his home. Born July 8, 1932 in Princess Anne County, Va., he was the son of the late James Louis and Queen Trueblood Lane and was the husband of the late Janet Luton Lane. Mr. Lane had been retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation where he had worked as a crane operator. He loved to hunt and was a member of the Weeksville and Dryridge Hunting Club. Mr. Lane is survived by a daughter, Melody Overton and husband, Ersal, of Hertford; two sons, Leslie Wayne Lane and wife, Darlene, and Michael Ray Lane and wife, Theresa, all of Elizabeth City; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Hill and wife, Leah, of Hertford, Stacey O. Ward and husband, Brad, of Hertford, Joshua Ray Lane, Ben Lane and Janet Lane, all of Elizabeth City, Charles Overton and Ersal Overton and wife, Jill, all of Elizabeth City; nine great-grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Hill of Charlotte, Chase and Connor Ward of Hertford, Addi Rae Lane of Windsor, Ethan and McKenna Overton of Elizabeth City, Deborah Wisniewski of Greensboro, Sarah Lassiter and husband, Jason, of Greenville and Joshua Wisniewski of Hertford; one great-great-grandchild, Ryland Lassiter of Greenville; and two sisters, Beulah Lane Rountree of Elizabeth City and Joyce Lane Horne of Hillsborough. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Bower; and a brother, Howard Lane. A funeral service will take place Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Campbell and the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 are suggested. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, is assisting the Lane family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
