Oconto County Reporter - (Summary of the article "Ervin Elfe Named Suring Man of the Year). Ervin attended Stevens Point State Teachers College and at age 19 taught at him home school, Breed Central. In 1937, Ervin Harold and their father, built Elfe's Service Garage in Suring and iperated it for 36 years. Ervin was involved in many community activities: the Civic Club; the Volunteer Fire Department; the Village Council serving as Trustee and President; Municipal Judge of the Village of Suring; a member and Treasurer of the Suring area Development Corporation. Life wasn't all work and no play. Ervins' parents had given up on him getting married. Ervin was waiting for the right girl to come along. In 1948, Ervin met the lovely Suring Farmers Mercantile Store bookeeper, Mabel Christensen. She brought her car in to his garage once too often. Together they helped organize the Suring 4-H Club. Ervin servid on the Oconto County Youth Fair Board and was a member of the Oconto County Rural-Urvan committee. He was the local representative for the Oconto County Dairy Queen Committee. Due to a spinal defect, Ervin was classified as 4-F during WWII. He took up flying on his own. He later bought his own Cub Trainer airplane and developed his own airfield. He was the scout leader for the Air Scout Organization in the Village of Suring, WI. Ervin always loved music and singing. In 1952, Ervin became a member of the Maple Valley male Chorus. Mabel also worked at the Hickory Store and was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Suring Water Department. They belonged to MT, . Olive Lutheran Church, where Mabel was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, The Ladies of the Church Organization and a Sunday School Teacher. Ervin served as Trustee and President of the Church Council. He was a Sunday School Teacher and served as Superintendent and Treasurer of the sunday School. In addition, Ervin was a Choir Director. He sang in the choir since its beginning at MT, . Olive. He helped organize the MT, . Olive Cemetery Association. he joined the International Lutheran Laymen's League and served as Vice-President in Northeastern WI and as Treasurer for the North WI-Upper MI, District
