The son of Joseph Stephen or Stevens & Daphana Elizabeth Dorleski (Farr) Seward, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Elmira, New York, January 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service in Harrisburg allegedly that same day (unlikely) as a private with Co. B, 13th Pennsylvania Reserves (42nd Pennsylvania Infantry, aka 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, aka "The Bucktails"). Some records show he enlisted in Perry County on June 4, 1861, but his company's records are inconsistent. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 1, 1864, and on May 31, 1864, transferred to Co. B, 190th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service. However, he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date September 30, 1864, reason as yet unknown as readily available records for this company and regiment are incomplete.

He married Mary Jane Cole December 12, 1867, in Bradford and fathered Martha Zeruba (b. 09/20/69, d. 04/12/74), George Algernon (b. 03/15/71), Levina Amelia (b. 08/08/72, d. 11/22/76), Fred T. Seward (b. @1874), Joseph Redman (b. 11/15/75, d. 02/22/77), and Paul Levari or Levan (b. 12/01/84). Cause of his death is listed as "chronic cardiac insufficiency" with "chronic parenchymatous nephritis" a contributing factor.
