MURPHYSBORO -- Odes E. "Hoppy" Hopkins, 89, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2012, in Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, in Pettett Funeral Home with Troy Humphrey officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc. or to Berean Christian Church in Murphysboro.

Gravesite services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Cowan Cemetery with military services conducted by Missouri Military Funeral Honors Team.

Odes was born July 1, 1923, to Otha M. Hopkins and Stella (Barrett) Hopkins in Lowndes, Mo., where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean conflict. Odes was well known as "Hoppy." He worked at Allen Industries in Herrin for 29 years, and later retired from SIU Carbondale.

Mr. Hopkins was a member of Berean Christian Church in Murphysboro, and a member of VFW Post 7190. In 2005, he married Gloria McRoberts in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include two stepdaughters, Loretta Spellmeyer of Columbia, Mo., and Marcia Chew of De Soto; two stepsons, J. E. Hebert of Louisiana and Greg McRoberts of Murphysboro; eight grandchildren, Mary Frances, Cindy, Jeffrey, David, Michelle, Austin, Scott and Nick; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gene Hopkins of Cottage Hills and Bill Hopkins of St. Charles, Mo.; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in May 2000; two brothers, Bob and Dale; one sister, Helen; one sister in infancy; and his parents.

The family of Odes "Hoppy" Hopkins wishes to thank the general public, who frequently saluted and thanked Hoppy for his service to the country. They also wish to thank Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc., Marion VAMC and Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County for all their help, care and comfort.
