Aged Resident of East Alton, Dies

Funeral Will Be Held At 2 O'Clock
Tuesday Afternoon

EAST ALTON, March 1.—Mrs.
Matilda Hawk, 83, died at 8:15 a.
m. Sunday, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Otto Renwisch, 416
Broadway, following an Illness of
heart trouble and hardening of the
arteries.
Mrs. Hawk was born April 20,
1853 in St. Louis, the daughter of
Fred and Mary Lux Buckelmeyer,
natives of France. When Mrs.
Hawk was an infant the family
moved to Tennessee. During the
Civil War the father was killed by
bushwhackers, who also burned
their home.
The mother took her daughter
to St. Louis after the father's
death, where Mrs. Hawk
grew to womanhood.
In 1874 she was married to
John Hawk in St. Louis.
They resided for a brief time on a
farm near Witt, after which they
moved to a farm on Chouteau Island,
where the husband died more
than 50 years ago.
Mrs. Hawk and her children
remained on the farm until 28 years
ago, when she moved to East Alton.
Ten years ago she went to live
with Mrs. Renwisch.

Surviving Mrs. Hawk are four
sons, Jack of East Alton, Udell of
Toole Lake, Calif., Warren of Edwardsville,
and Robert of Porthill, Ida.,
and the daughter, Mrs. Renwisch.
Also surviving are four grandsons,
Village Clerk Joe Nolan of
East Alton, Roy, Norman and Neal
Hawk of Porthill, Ida., and a
foster grandson, Henry Stodler of
Burbank, Calif.
Owing to the death of Mrs.
Hawk, the village clerk's office will
be closed until after the funeral,
tentative plans for which have been
set for 2 p. m. Tuesday at the
Bauer & Hoehn funeral home in
Alton.
The Rev. W. D. Sommons will
officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Upper Alton.
Friends may call at the funeral
home this evening and until time
for the funeral.

Matilda Hawk's maiden name is Buckelmeyer, but was shortened to Meyers and/or Meier.
