John was born 3 Mar 1888 in Pineville, MO, son of Robert Franklin Prater and Elizabeth Ann Starnes. He was the 6th of twelve children and moved to Washington State when he was one. He grew up in Deer Park, WA and went into the transportation business as an adult. On 16 Jun 1916, he married Josephine Ida Meyers from Wisconsin in Spokane, WA. They had one child, Helen Josephine Prater Aune. John served in the US Army during WWI. John and Josephine are buried in Riverside Park in Spokane, WA.
