Private Edward M. Evans Sr. of the field artillery U.S. Army has been awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action at Bougainville, Solomon Islands on Nov. 9, 1944. The citation reads as follows: During and attack on an infantry company's frontline by a large number of the enemy Pvt. Evans, an artillery radio operator left the compartive safety and security of his foxhole in the rear, picked up a stretcher, made his way alone for 20 yards under heavy mortar fire to the frontline, continued along the line under heavy fire in order to reach a seriously wounded infantryman. With the aid of another soldier he assisted in bringing the casualty back to a improvised aid station where he assisted in giving plasma and medical aid. Pvt. Evans' disregard for great danger, was of material aid in saving the life of a fellow soldier. His wife, Mrs. June Evans and son Edward Jr. reside with his parents Mr. W.K. Evans of Williamsfield.
