United States Marine Corps General. He commanded the United States' 3rd Marine Division during the War in Vietnam, and became the highest ranking United States military personnel to die in the conflict when the helicopter he was riding in crashed outside of the city of Hue. During World War II he served in the South Pacific and participated in the Saipan and Tinian campaigns. He commanded 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines during the Battle of Okinawa, and was Executive Officer of the 4th Marine Division when they landed in Japan in 1945. His name can be found on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC on Panel 29E, Line 095.
