Commercial Review, The (Portland, IN) - Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Deceased Name: Velma Sanders Velma Alta Sanders, 87, 410 W. Main St., Portland, died Friday in Ball Memorial Hospital. Born in Bluff Point on Oct. 9, 1917, to Orla and Hatie (Steed) Lawson, she graduated from Portland High School in 1936. She married Chester Sanders on Dec. 31, 1945. He died on March 15, 1991. A member of Asbury United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Homemakers Class and the Dorcas Circle. She had also been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 60 years and owned and operated Sanders' apartments on West Main Street. Survivors include a son, Gary W. Sanders, Portland; two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. Services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor Greg Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will be in Green Park Cemetery. Visitation is today from 3 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of the Asbury United Methodist Church.
