Carlene Petersen Salling was the daughter of Mogen and Karen Salling, born April 22, 1871 in Kjellerup, Viborg, Denmark. She was baptized and confirmed in the Danish Lutheran church. In the year 1888 she came to the United States with one of her sisters, to be with another sister that had come across earlier. On May 18, 1890, she was united in marriage to Jesse Edward Swaim in Lincoln, Nebraska. From here after two years they moved to Greenwood and in 1892 they moved to Ravenna. In 1914 they came to Palmer, Nebraska, residing on a farm until seven years ago they moved to Palmer to make their home. After a lingering illness Mrs. Swaim passed to the beyond March 6, 1945, the last member of her parental family. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Swaim, five of whom, with their father, remain to mourn her passing away: Mrs. Lena Fuehrer and Mrs. Jessie Freeland of Palmer; Mrs. Eva Clark of Caldwell, Idaho; Mrs. Irene McGraw of Broken Bow, Nebraska, and Cecil in the U. S. Army in the Solomon Islands. One son, Fredrick Martin, died in boyhood. Sixteen grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren survive also.
