SMITH -- Arthur Frank Smith, 76, 2111 Portland Place, died at 6:25 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 1990, in his home, after a long illness. Born July 16, 1913, in Salem, Wis. son of Ray Arthur and Amy (Moran) Smith. Attended schools in Salem. Lived 48 years in Rockford, coming here in 1942 from Salem. Married Lois Marie Kilkelly July 3, 1944, in St. Mary Church, Rockford. Work 32 1/2 years at Sundstrand Corp, as master mechanic. Proud member VAW and was instrumental in implementing and upgrading group insurance benefits for Sundstrand's employees. He also was a professional house painter many years. Former member 7th Ward Democratic Club and former precinct committee man. Member St. James Catholic Church, Harmony Club, Sportsman Club, Baltic Club, Svithoid Club and Diehard Chicago Cubs Fan Club. In early year, he was an avid sportsman and particularly enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Lois; five daughters, Rosemary (Julius) Kopp, Patricia (Gerald) Haney, Janette (Vito) Grisanzio, Phyllis Grisanzio, Rockford, and Kathleen (Lawrence) Haney, Summerfield, Fla.; one son, Daniel Arthur (Yvonne) Smith, Cherry Valley; 13 grandchildren; one nephew, James Schultz, Silver Lake, Wis.; one niece Nola Dendon, Alameda, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews by marriage. Predeceased by his parents, three sisters, Ethelyn Faber, Irene Faben and Elizabeth Kingsbury; and one nephew, Charles Cummings, Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, in St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Wentink, the Rev. Bernard Mullane and the Very Rev. Norbert Richter, officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by FITZGERALD & SON FUNERAL HOME LTD., 3910 N. Rockton Ave., where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with rosary recited, and from 10 a.m. to service Wednesday.
