William Leonard Gaultney, 42-year-old, was fatally
injured in a one-car crash about ½ mile west of
Howard on Highway 96. The only county Labor Day
fatality occurred about 11:30 a.m. Monday.
The 1963 Ford pickup left the road and traveled 660
feet, overturning several times before striking a
tree. The accident apparently was caused by excessive
speed, according to Deputy Sheriff Charles Young, and
the driver lost control of the vehicle on a curve.
Mr. Gaultney died a short time later in the
Montgomery Hospital in Butler. Completed funeral
arrangements will be announced later.
