Father Robert Barrett, CSP, the first South African Paulist, was born in Potchefstroom, South Africa, on August 7, 1925. He attended the local schools and entered the Sacred Heart Seminary in Aliwal North, South Africa. He stayed there only a short while before immigrating to the U.S. and entering the Paulist community.
He made his first profession on September 8, 1945 and was ordained a Catholic priest on March 7, 1950, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Johannesburg, South Africa, which at that time was under the pastoral care of the Paulist Fathers.
In October he began studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After receiving his License in 1952, he joined the Newman Hall staff in Austin, Texas.
He returned to South Africa in 1955, serving as both a curate in the parish and as a member of the mission band.
By the early 1960's he had returned to the U.S. as procurator in the Paulist community in Chicago and, in September 1966, he joined the campus ministry staff at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Heart and respiratory problems limited his abilities and after 1967 and in February, 1969, his health rapidly declined and forced him into semi-retirement. He died in Detroit only four months later at the age of 43 after only 19 years as a Paulist priest.
