He was born to Percy and Elsie Debnam Lyons in Wendell, N.C. He was preceded in death by his father Percy and a sister Elsie Athen Lyons. He atttended Shaw Jr. High School and Cardoza High in Washington D.C. Upon graduation he took a job as a messsenger in the U.S. State Department until the outbreak of World War II. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and became a staff sergeant in the 1903rd Ordinance Ammunition company. He served in Burma and India and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon, The American Theater Ribbon, The World War II Victory Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. He worked at the National Oceanographic Data Center. He worked there until his retirement in 1972.
He belonged to John F. Cook Lodge No. 10. He was a proven leader and an inspirational instructor of the Masonic Temple. Children: Douglas C. Lyons, and Linda M. Lyons; Mother: Elsie Debnam Lyons
