Roy was born at home Jan. 16, 1931, to Harold and Beulah (Hatch) Cook, in Middle Granville. He went to school in the Granville area and lived his whole life there. He was a hard worker, having spent his time working for more than 25 years in the slate quarries and 17 years at Norton Sealents. He retired in 1993 so he could spend more of his time with his wife in their many interests.
Roy married Gertrude "Trudy" Miller on June 4, 1966, in Middlebury, Vt. They spent their 46 years together in Granville. They were united in their faith as Jehovah's Witnesses and used much of their time in the ministry together. Right to the end they spoke together of his hope of living forever in Paradise.
Besides his parents, Roy was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and wife, Marian and brother, Earl, both of Poultney, Vt., Emerson and wife, Alice, of Raceville, N.Y., Hershel and wife, Irene, of Liverpool, N.Y.; brother-in-law and the best man at his wedding to Trudy, George Benway and brother-in-law Donald "Jack" Dennison.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude; and his five children by his first wife, Virginia Beattie, Lanceton and wife, Judy, of Granville, Michael and wife, Tina, of Danby, Vt., Jenny and husband, Earl Wilday, of North Carolina, Mark and his companion, Neva Jaworski, of Hebron and Mary and husband, Floyd Gebo, of Whitehall. Roy proudly had 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sisters, Pauline Dennison of Middle Granville and Doris Benway of Whitehall; his brother, James of Wilton, Calif., and sister-in-law, Dorothy Cook of Poultney, Vt.
Important to Roy was his faith and he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1965. He served his God Jehovah faithfully for 47 years, always ready to share his faith right up to the end. He worked as an appointed ministerial servant in the Granville Congregation and was rarely missing from the meetings or in the door-to-door ministry.
Besides his ministry, Roy loved to garden, always having a large vegetable garden and many flowers to care for. He loved to read and go out to eat. He had a special affection for cats, having had many during his lifetime, including Bootsie, Dolly, Trixie and Sunshine. He had the company of his cat, Smokey Joe, right to the end.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 14, 2012, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on 7365 Route 22 Granville, NY. Roger Hayward, a long time friend and elder in the congregation, will conduct the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home, Granville, N.Y.
