Barbara was one of 8 children of Andrew Hershey and Catherine (Emmert) Hershey . She was a second cousin twice removed of Milton Snavely Hershey, the founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company. Barbara married Samuel Merritt Hitt on April 3,1823 in Maryland. They were the parents of 12 children only six of whom lived to maturity.
