CHRISTOPHER L. AVERY
DEATH OF AGED AND PROMINENT CITIZEN OF GROTON.

Christopher L. Avery, an aged and prominent citizen of Groton, passed away at 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 1.
Mr. Avery had been in delicate health since early last summer, when premonitions of serious heart trouble caused anxiety to his family, though able to be about during the summer and fall and within a few days of his death.
Mr. Avery was born in Groton June 8, 1826. He was the son of Latham Avery and Betsey Wood Lester, his wife. He is descended from James Avery, one of the founders of New London and Groton. His grandfather, Ensign Daniel Avery, was on of the defenders and martyrs of Fort Griswold in 1781. Mr. Avery, when a boy, made a voyage to China in a clipper ship from New York and on his return engaged in business as a grain commission merchant in Buffalo and afterwards in New York.
In 1850 he married Miss Sarah W. Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., by whom he had three children surviving: Latham, Mary Louisa, wife of P. L. Schellens, and Betsey Wood, wife of Belton A. Copp, all of Groton. His first wife died in September, 1869, He married in November 1870, for his second wife, Miss Ellen Barber Copp of Groton who survives him. By her he leaves two children, Christopher Lester and Mary Jane, wife of Archibald Maine, also of Groton.
In 1872 Mr. Avery retired from active business in New York to his farm in Groton, situated in the Eastern Point district on a noble site overlooking New London harbor and Long Island sound. Here his life has been very busy , clearing the land of rocks and putting them into massive walls, raising thoroughbred cattle of the Jersey and Holstein breeds, planting orchards and cultivating luxuriant crops of corn, potatoes, oats, clover and grass. He was fond of country life and found in it ample scope for his unusual physical and mental activities. He took an interest in all public improvements, good roads, good schools and was a liberal supporter of every well directed effort to better the general welfare. He has recently with a number of other public spirited gentlemen of Groton without any near prospect of reward introduced the water and electric light plants which add so much to the security and prosperity of the west side of the town. He was a large minded, hospitable generous, brave like his ancestors before him. Pious towards God and charitable toward his fellow men. In him closes at a ripe old age, a fruitful and blameless life. Of a large family only one sister, Mrs. Julia Sherman of Buffalo, survives him.
