Charles, a merchant and farmer, was the son of Henry F. Burruss and his second wife, Sarah Tompkins Wortham of Caroline County. He married Kate in Caroline County on 17 September 1857. They had at least eight children: Charles Henry, Mabel, Robert Lee, Grayson B., Cotesworth Pinckney, Elizabeth Eyraud, Lorenzo Gennet, and Albert Sidney.
