The son of John Jacob & Mary (Shoemaker) Burkholder, he married Anna Snell and fathered Jacob S. (b. 05/06/54), William H. (b. 09/23/57), and Joseph N. (b. @1858 - although the 1860 census lists him as a seven-year-old). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living with his family in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He is in the 1860 census as "Berkholder."

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 1 as a private with Co. A, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. According to his pension index, he also served with Co. F, 191st Pennsylvania Infantry, but he is not found in the company register, muster roll, Bates, or ARIAS. Further research is in the offing.

In 1880, he lived in Harrisburg. Anna died in 1893, and he may have married Elizabeth Laush, although that is unconfirmed and she does not appear with him in the 1900 census for McKean County at which time he was living with his son William.
