Florence Bertha Hite, born March 7, 1881, daughter of Clemuel Green Hite and Mary Emma Benedict, was born in Grinnell, Iowa. Bertha contracted what she called Lung Fever, on March 7, 1882. A little cup and saucer bought by her father, was a comfort to her and also served as a utensil for the medicine she was to take for the four consecutive years that she suffered sporadic attacks of the illness. In 1888, her mother upset a teapot on Bertha, and she was scalded with the hot tea. After removing her wool stockings, little skin remained on her legs. Living a great distance from town and a doctor, home remedies were used to treat the burns. Bertha was a working girl, playing piano at a sheet music store.
