1850 United States Census

Orangetown, Rockland County, New York

.... Cornelius Smith, age 75, Farmer, Real Estate $2,000, Born New York
.... Martha, 43, Born New York

It appears that Cornelius' only daughter, Martha (who was married to John P. Haring) was living with her father, Cornelius. Initially it was thought that this was due to an aging parent that might needed help. However, from his will and from the fact that Martha never lived with John in later years, it is deemed that this couple had marital issues.

Martha's last name appears as SMITH on this Census.

After Cornelius dies, Martha appears NOT to live with husband John P Haring. We do wonder if there was a divorce.
