Douglas Hines Barclay, 73, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Mr. Barclay was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in Air Defense Artillery upon graduation from Auburn University in July of 1961. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1989, changing branches to the Ordnance Corps following his first overseas assignment in Japan as Aide de Camp to MG Chester Clark. His career brought him to Redstone Arsenal for 2 separate tours. He had two tours in Vietnam, spent 1½ years on assignment in Wurzburg, Germany, and 1½ year in Stuttgart, Germany, various other assignments in the United States and retired in 1989 as a Colonel and moved back to Huntsville. At that time he started his own company and consulted to others for several years.
He participated in building 23 homes for Habitat for Humanity, was dedicated to Rotary International, serving in several capacities including President of the Rotary Club of Greater Huntsville and was elected District Governor of the North Alabama District 6860. He was to begin serving in that capacity on July 1, but when his health failed, he was honored in the hospital by a special ceremony pinning the District Governor's pin on, then passing that pin on to his replacement. He was then awarded the Past District Governor's pin and was named Rotarian of the Year by his own club. He took great pride in having established a service in his church called Trinity Troopers, which was made up of volunteers who performed small maintenance services for members of the church who needed assistance.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marian, his son Douglas II and wife Christie of Huntsville, daughter Karen Hughes and her husband David of St. Louis, and son Alan and wife Susan also of Huntsville as well as grandchildren Justin Barclay, Kenna and Jacob Hughes, Dylan and Emma Chandler, and brother John Barclay III of Las Cruces, N.M.
Visitation will be at Trinity United Methodist Church at 607 Airport Road, Huntsville, Al, from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012, followed by a service in the sanctuary and burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Rotary Foundation of Greater Huntsville, P.O. Box 772, Huntsville, Alabama, 35804.
