James Francis Murphy was from a patriotic family filled with military veterans among his contemporary family and generations into the past, including the Confederate Infantry and Cavalry. He was single in June 1917, and had completed three years as an Infantry Corporal in the California National Guard when he registered for the World War I draft.
James was the son of John William Murphy of Tennessee and Laura Belle Blalock of Mississippi. He wed Anna McPherson and was a firefighter by trade.
They had three children: Juanita K., Ramona L., and James F.
