SLINGERLANDS -- Dr. Seward W. MacDonald, 79, a prominent Albany dentist, passed away Monday at St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness. Dr. MacDonald grew up in Albany and has lived in Slingerlands since 1973. He was a graduate of the Albany Academy 1939, Dartmouth College 1943 and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School 1951. He practiced dentistry in Albany for over 40 years and was on the staff at Albany Medical Center and at Child's Hospital. Dr. MacDonald was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Second Lieutenant for the United States Marine Corps, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Division and saw action in the Battle of Saipan in the Pacific Theatre. Dr. MacDonald is a member of the Albany Country Club, a former member of the Fort Orange Club, Chatiemac Club, Warrensburg, The Akwissassne Club, Northville and served as district enrollment director for Dartmouth College 1963-1974. He was also very involved with youth sports, having coached at various levels for Pine Bush Little League and Babe Ruth during the 60's and 70's. Survivors include his wife, Marene Schermerhorn MacDonald; a daughter, Lynda MacDonald McCabe (Brian) of Altamont; two sons, John Seward MacDonald (Cheri) of Melrose, MS and William Martin MacDonald of Slingerlands; a brother, Dewitt K. MacDonald (Dolly) of San Raphael, CA; six grandchildren, Matthew, Tyson and Christopher McCabe of Altamont and Bradley, Ryan and Taylor MacDonald of Melrose, MS; and four nephews. Visitation hours will be Wednesday, August 2nd, 5-8 p.m. at the Tebbutt Funeral Home, 420 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. Funeral service and interment will be private. Contributions may be made to St. Peter's Home Health Care or to the Dartmouth College Athletic Department.
