Avery R. Baker Sr. (Jack Baker), 88, of William Penn Highway, Huntingdon, PA 16652.

Jack, went home to the Lord on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Lee Hospital in Johnstown. He was born December 31, 1920 in Aitch, PA. Son of the late Avery Franklin and Mary Belle (Stapleton) Baker.

He married Betty L. (Stake) Baker of Mount Union, PA in 1948, she survives him along with a son: Avery R. Baker Jr., and Grandson Avery R. Baker III of Huntingdon, PA.

Two Brothers, the late Wayne and Ed Baker and two Sisters, the late Phyllis (Tanner) of Saxton and Bessie (Fisher)... all of the James Creek area.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was in the submarine service during World War II.

He (Jack) and his wife (Betty) operated a dairy farm at Shy Beaver, PA from 1948 to 1970. Jack and Betty worked shoulder to shoulder to develop one the top-producing (DHIA) herds of registered Holsteins in the county. Jack, also, worked at the the PA State Correctional Institution for 24 years as Tradesman Instructor/ Correction Officer at Huntingdon, PA. He was given the name as " Big Jack " by the inmates, was a fair man and wrote letter's to the parole board for several of the men that deserved a second chance in life.

He was avid hunter and fisherman and traveled a number of times to Wyoming to hunt Elk, Mule Deer and Grizzly in the 60's. He was and will always be the very best role model that a Son and Grandson could ever have. He was Man's Man all his life, good to his word, the word Quit was Not in his vocabulary. He had a long illness and battled hard and lived up to his name as "One Tough Ole Man." Jack, fell victim (in a way of saying) to poor medical care that is largely inadequate for our elder seniors (sad but true) in the USA.

Nearly all of his life long friend's are gone now. Jack became a man of God along the way and would ask for certain prayer's and lead out with the word's with his minister. Yes, he has gone to better place.. to the House of God; but his earthly presence will remain here by... the wisdom of his word's and by setting the example, that's my Dad and Grandfather(Jack Baker).

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton with Rev. James Patterson officiating.
