George Washington Sawyer was the son of James Sawyer and Hannah Hays; grandson of James Sawyer and Rachel Ball.

George Washington Sawyer was a minister and held prayer meetings among the Indians.
He settled in Hamilton Co TN near where Chattanooga now stands known then as
Gunter's Landing. He owned some land where the town is now built.

"Moved at an early date from Bledsoe Co to Hamilton Co and settled in the neighborhood of old Dallas, which at that time was the County Seat. He later moved to Ringgold, GA where he lived for several years. During this time, his wife died. He then returned to Hamilton Co TN where he spent the remainder of his life and where his children resided."

George Washington Sawyer gave the land for the Jackson's Chapel Methodist Church. This church was originally known as Prairie Creek and was the oldest Methodist Church in Hamilton Co. Brother-in-law, John Bradfield, was the first Pastor.
