Soft Music at His Tomb. -

A dispatch from Saratoga Springs says a cemetery with daily concerts in its receiving vault is an attraction that Saratoga now offers to the world, in addition to its mineral springs and great hotels. The town would never have been able to do this had not the late Robert Ireland, before his death, made the request that after his body was entombed there be music of some kind in the sepulchre every day. In carrying out this request a woman who inherited Ireland's fortune, and who says she is his widow, has placed a Swiss music box in the receiving vault of Greenridge cemetery where the body is. Every day the woman visits the vault, winds up the box, and, taking a seat beside it, softly weeps while the favorite airs of the departed Ireland are played.

DEATH LIST OF A DAY

Robert Ireland, son of the late William B. Ireland, of this city died Thursday in his sixtieth year, at the Prospect Park Hotel, Catskill, N.Y.

William B. Ireland will be remembered by the older residents of New York as a large real estate owner near Washington Square. In the early part of the century, he purchased a tract of land extending from Broadway to Greenwich Street and from Leonard to Reade Street, making 1,000 feet frontage on Broadway and comprising over sixteen acres.

The property passed into the hands of his sons at the time of his death, in 1862, and Robert Ireland devoted his entire time to the management of the estate. The family residence was of 35 Washington Square, but Mr. Ireland had not lived in the city for some time.

The burial will be at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. today.

Robert W. Ireland, a member of the family intimately connected with New York City realty interests for a great many years, died last week at the Prospect Park Hotel, Catskill, NY in his sixtieth year.

He was the grandson of William B. Ireland, who was known to an earlier generation of New Yorkers as a large holder of property near Washington Square.

In the early part of the century, William B. Ireland purchased a tract of land extending from Broadway to Greenwich street and from Leonard to Reade street, having a frontage of 1,000 feet on Broadway and comprising sixteen and three quarters acres. He had to dispose of this tract to satisfy a bond on which he had become surety.

Later he bought a triangular piece of land bounded by the old Amity lane from Sullivan to Bleecker street and Broadway, thence north by Broadway to 3d street and west to point of beginning, in all about seven and one half acres. This was divided on his death and considerable parts are still owned by his descendants.

John B Ireland, who owns the northwest corner of West Broadway and 3d street, is a cousin of Robert W., and another grandson of William B., whose death is now recorded, and John De Courcy Ireland, his son, and a partner in the firm of Strong & Ireland, a half cousin of Robert W. and a great grandson of the founder of the house.
