A graveside service will be held for Dr. Stewart Sutherland Barron, MD, 93, of Nacogdoches, Texas at 11:00 AM on Saturday April 4, 2015 at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Dr. Barron passed away peacefully at his home on April 1, 2015. Stewart, a first generation American, was born in Flint, Michigan, on May 17, 1921, to George Barron and Kate Ann Webster Clark Barron who met and married in the United States after they emigrated from Scotland in the early 1900's. Stewart graduated from high school in 1939, and matriculated at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, that fall. He received a bachelor's degree in business from the college in 1943.
Before completing his undergraduate studies, Stewart enlisted in the United States Navy in February of 1942. He was sent for training to service schools including the Supply Corps School at Harvard University (Boston, Massachusetts) and the USN Midshipman School at Columbia University (New York, New York), and was commissioned in October 1943. While in the armed forces, Stewart was a supply and disbursing officer with LSM Group 20 in the Pacific Theatre. He earned the rank of Lieutenant (JG) and was honorably discharged in April 1951.
To further his education, Stewart took premedical courses at Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas, and applied to medical school. He was accepted by Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas in Dallas and was among the first classes to graduate from this new medical school formed during the middle of World War II. After graduation from medical school in 1953, Dr. Barron was licensed by the Texas Medical Board and completed an internship and residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. He held a specialty certification in ophthalmology issued by American Board of Ophthalmology in 1959 and practiced in Dallas prior to establishing the first ophthalmology practice in Nacogdoches in 1967. He had hospital privileges at Memorial Hospital and retired from active practice in 1980.
Dr. Barron is survived by his niece - Barbara Ann Smith Michael, JD, MS, of Houston, Texas; nephews - Dwight Gordon Smith of Vestal, New York; Henry M. Middlebrook of Nacogdoches, Texas; Tom A. Middlebrook, MD, of Nacogdoches, Texas; and George F. Middlebrook III of Nacogdoches, Texas; and stepdaughter Cathy Feild Hicks of Kirby, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Catherine Baxter Barron Smith; his first wife, Hollis Jean Mast Barron; and his second wife, Carlene Feild Barron.
