Monday, January 07, 2008
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Michael Granfortuna, 88, of Eltingville, a World War II veteran, died yesterday in the Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home.

Born in Manhattan, Mr. Granfortuna moved to Brooklyn in 1939 and settled in Eltingville in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner of a merchant ship during World War II.

He graduated from Hollywood Beauty School in Manhattan in 1949, and later worked as the head of shipping for the Widder Corporation on Long Island. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Granfortuna was a counselor of squires for the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn for 18 years, hosting various trips for children sponsored by the organization. He received awards for his charitable work from the local and Long Island chapters of the Knights of Columbus, in addition to honors from the state and Supreme Council. He was also the past commander of the American Legion Bill Brown Post in Brooklyn.

In his spare time, he enjoyed dining out and visiting his grandchildren.

He was a parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville.

"He will be missed," said his wife of 67 years, Bea Granfortuna.

In addition to his wife, Bea, surviving are his sister, Linda DiTomasso; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at Holy Child Church. The time has not yet been set. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.

There is an error in this obituary--Linda DiTommaso is a daughter not a sister.
