Picnic Ends In Tragedy
Doyle Beatty, Star Athlete Loses Life in W.H.S. Outing
Doyle Beatty, 18 years old, star athlete of Wilkinson High School and winner of the 1942 Sportsmanship Trophy, was drowned Sunday afternoon in Flat Rock River near Shelbyville, where he and a group of classmates had gone for a picnic.
He was a member of the 1942 graduating class, which had assembled at the school building for the purpose of going to Brown County for an outing. Two carloads left for the picnic, but the car carrying Doyle and his four chums, Owen Barrett, James Raley, Marvin Bennett and James (junior) Rozzell, became separated from the others.
After spending some time in fruitless search for their classmates, the five boys turned back homeward, but stopped to wade in the Flat Rock River.
The water was not deep, but Doyle stepped into a pocket and was unable to extricate himself. In spite of the valiant efforts of James Raley, the victim could not be recovered from the river until a man giving his name as Lonnie Henderson brought him to shore where every effort was made to resuscitate him, but after three hours hope was abandoned.
Doyle was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Webb Beatty of near Wilkinson. He was born at Windfall, Indiana, but had lived 16 years of his life here.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Milton Persons in the Wilkinson Methodist Church at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Member of the 1942 class acted as pallbearers and flower carriers. Interment was in McCray cemetery.
Survivors include the parents, four sisters, Donna, Gleeta, Bonita Faye, and Mrs. Roberta Carr, and two brothers, Gene and Gary.
