HILLMAN P. RODGERS

Hillman Philip Rodgers of Brunswick, Tennessee, former executive of Southland Paper Company, livestock breeder and farmer at Davies Plantation in Brunswick, died Jan. 30 at Baptist Hospital. He was 76.

Mr. Rodgers was born in Holmes County, Miss., Nov. 28, 1899 near Owen's Wells. He was the son of the late William Clay and Sarah Eubank Rodgers, lifetime residents of Holmes County. He was the last living member of his immediate family.

Many nieces and nephews throughout the Mid-South area survive him; among them is Mrs. John W. O'Kelley of Lexington. His body lay in state at his home, Davies Plantation, from Friday night until the services, Sunday at 2 p.m. in the J.B. Griffin Memorial Chapel in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Brunswick. Rev. Warren Haynes, Rector, Calvary Episcopal Church, Memphis, officiated. Burial was in the cemetery with Memphis Funeral Horne on Union in Memphis in charge.

Rodgers, husband of Shelby County historian Mrs. Ellen Davies Rodgers, was a director of the Tennessee Livestock Association, the Brownsville Feeder Calf Association and the Shelby County Farm Bureau. He was a past president of the Shelby County Livestock Association and a board member of the American Cattlemen's Association. He was a Mason, a Shriner, a founding member of the Shelby Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member of the United Sons of the Confederacy. He was a communicant of Calvary Episcopal Church and an organizing member of St. Philip Episcopal Church, Davieshire near Brunswick and served on the Davieshire Library Board.

He also leaves four foster daughters, Sara B. Gandy, Frances Gandy and Elba Gandy, all of the Davies Plantation, and Mrs. Burnell D. Hardee of Gueydan, La.
