WOOLLEY, RICHARD B. Retired Navy Commander and Educator Born in San Diego on January 8, 1921, of a San Diego daughter and naval aviator, graduate of Annapolis. Passed away December 11, in San Diego.
Graduated from San Diego State University and University of Southern California with a master degree in Speech Pathology.
Married for 57 years to Jo Ellen Q. Woolley and had a son, Richard, and a daughter, Jo Ellen. Served 29 years in the Navy, retired as a Commander.
He was in the first wave at Omaha Beach where he took 6 small boats into the beach and brought them all back. He also rescued several men and took them to a hospital ship on his way back. Then, he had to chase his LST 316 halfway across the English Channel.
He taught Speech, Stagecraft, Drama and English for 33 years at Hoover High School. He was very active in community organizations and served in leadership roles in many. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a member of the Normal Heights lodge #632. He was a member of the California State Sheriff's Association, the Military Order of the World Wars, a life member of the California and national LST Association, and many other organizations.
He is survived by his wife, brother, daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Visitations are scheduled from noon until 8 p.m., Monday, December 16, and services for 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 17, at Lewis Colonial-Benbough Mortuary, 3051 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego. Donations are suggested to the San Diego Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc.
