George L. Carroll was born in Preston, Iowa, March 5, 1868. He moved to Kilkenny with his parents in 1882 and was employed as telegraph operator there and his father as station agent. Although but fourteen years of age he never was known to make an error and never was missing from his post of duty. In 1887 he resigned his position as operator in the general office of the M. & St. L., at Minneapolis, to return to his former home near St. Louis, MO securing a position with the MO Pca. Ry. in that city and remained in their employ until death. His steady advancement was the best evidence of his faithfulness and ability. At the time of his death he was chief dispatcher with headquarters at Jefferson City, MO. He was a practical Christian and was never known to turn a deaf ear or refuse a helping hand to those in distress. He was often heard to remark that it was "deeds not words" that we needed in this world and he has now gone where his many noble deeds are recorded in the book of life.
The remains arrived in Kilkenny Friday morning, accompanied by his sister, Susie, who went to Atlantic City a few weeks ago and his brother, Louis, of Chicago. The funeral was held from the Catholic Church in Kilkenny on Saturday morning, Rev. P.J. Carey officiating, who paid a touching eulogy to his memory. The large number present on a stormy Saturday morning attest to the high personal regard of the deceased. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his father who preceded him sixteen years ago. The pall bearers were: D.F. Gorman, John Greer, Frank Crosby, W.P. Murphy, F. D. Judge and F.A. Poehler.
Besides his mother, he leaves to mourn his untimely demise, two brothers and four sisters, Mrs. C.W. Meyer of Hastings, Mrs. Matt Murphy and Miss Kate and Susie Carroll of Kilkenny, Jas. L. of Atlantic City, N.J. and Louis M. of Chicago, ILL. Montgomery Messenger, May 21, 1909.
