James Olin Simpson, 65, of Zion Church Road, died Feb. 18, 1999, at Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 24, 1933, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late H. F. and Hettie Whitener Simpson

He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served as a Sunday school teacher and as an usher, He was a member of the Church Council and was involved with Boy Scouts Troop 238, Men in Mission, the Mutual Ministry Committee and various other committees.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957.

He taught history and health, and coached basketball and baseball, at Konnoak School from 1961 to 1976, he was assistant principal at Blackburn Middle School from 1976 to 1993 and at Startown Elementary School from 1993 to 1995.

He was preceded in death by a brother. Carroll Simpson, a sister, Jeanette Lehmons; and a nephew, Phil Warren.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Moretz Simpson, a son and daughter-in-law, two sisters, and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces. and great-nephews.

The funeral will be conducted by the Revs Edward Harper, Olin Isenhour and Gail Wartner at 3 p.m. today at his church.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hickory Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
