The 1910 U.S. Federal Census places Finley McLain in Thayer Township, Oregon County, Missouri USA with his parents, John W. and Nellie D. McLain, along with five of his siblings. They were: Earl, George, Olo (Arlo), Grace and Thomas. Finley was just 10 months old.

Findley lost his mother when he was five years old. Nellie D. McLain died on December 19, 1914 as the result of childbirth.

By 1920, his father, John W. McLain had remarried to Claudia O'Ella Thomas and the U.S. Federal Census tells us the family is now living in Long Tom Township, Lane County, Oregon USA. Children in the household are: Earl, George, Arlo, Thomas, Finley and Elwin (Elvan) McLain by John's marriage to Nellie. An addition and half sister to Finley is Sarah McLain, who is one year old.
