Sookie was born in Anderson, Texas, October 4, 1922. Her family moved to Pearsall, Texas, when she was 5 years old, where her father was hired as the superintendent of schools, and her mother was a teacher.
Sookie went on to attend Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. After graduation in 1944, she was hired by Humble Oil in Baytown, Texas. There she met some of her lifelong friends who also went to work at Humble Oil due to the war effort. Margie Lafosse, Margie Eastwood and Mary Easley were some of the closest and dearest of the long list of friends that she had in and around Baytown.
Sookie met and later married Buck Bonds on September 20, 1957. They were married for 38 years, until Buck passed away in 1995. Sookie said Buck always made her laugh and that was one of the reasons she married him. Anyone who knew Buck knows that was true because he made everyone laugh.
Sookie lived by the spirit of God every day from a very young age. After she and Buck built a house in Lakewood, she joined Wooster Baptist Church in 1958 and was very active in the church up to the very end. She was able to make this year's Christmas Eve service which was very important to her.
She was very generous and gave to many charities. She really enjoyed being involved in the Homeless Shelter and what it stood for. Pete Alfaro did a great job of keeping her involved with the activities that went on there. She was honored to be involved in the ground breaking of the new shelter that was built recently.
She always thought like a young person. She kept up with what was in style. Whether it was with fashion or social media, or anything for that matter. She kept her mind sharp by working crossword puzzles every day, playing with her bridge clubs, canasta, etc. She was very sharp until the end.
Sookie loved traveling and went on many trips to Europe with friends and family until she could not physically do it anymore. The trips that stood out to Sookie were those with her granddaughter Kathy when they went to London and the British Isles, and also to Israel.
She was very involved and loved all of her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George P. Barron and Maris Ethel Barron; husband, Harry (Buck) Bonds; brother, George P. Barron Jr., and her granddaughter Kathy McDaniel.
She is survived by her son Harry Bonds and wife, Marteen of Houston; Bobby Bonds and wife, Mona of Baytown; 4 grandkids, Trey Bonds and wife, Laurie of North Little Rock Arkansas, Bobby B.
