Thomas served in the G.A.R. He was a private, mustered into service March 28, 1865, in Philadelphia, to Company G, 110th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was assigned to a new company in April 1865. He mustered out June 28, 1865.

Thomas settled in the village of McClarran, a rural area between Greensburg and Latrobe. When Thomas's parents both died in 1874, he took in his younger brother, John, who had been orphaned at age 13. At this time, Thomas was already a man of prominence.
Thomas married Isabella (Sibbie) Story in 1875, and they became the parents of twin daughters, Lillian Maud and Daisy.
Thomas was postmaster of the village of McClarran and ran a store and blacksmith shop in connection with the post office there, the entire community being situated close to the location of the Mine No. One, of the Jamison Coal & Coke Company.
At the age of 66, Thomas died on December 24, 1912, at the village of McClarran.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Lillian.
He was survived by his wife; a daughter, Daisy McClarran Oursler; and a brother, John.
