Ernest Bowman was a Police Officer in Macomb, Illinois, for one year. He died in the line of duty, at age 38. Him and two other Police Officers, Albert Links and Edward Whittlesey, took a suspect into custody and had just pulled up to the Police Department, when the man pulled out a 9 shot, .32 caliber pistol and opened fire, striking all three Officers, multiple times. He then exchanged shots with a 4th Police Officer who was coming out of the Police Station. The man fled in the Police Car, with Officer Bowman still in the back seat, mortally wounded. Officer Bowman managed to draw his service weapon and shot the suspect five times, killing him. Officer Bowman died the following day from his injuries, the other two escorting Officers also died from their injuries. Officer Bowman was survived by his expectant wife and four other children.
