Born December 4, 1925, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Pink James Wagoner and Martha Ervin Wagoner. He was a retired truck driver, having worked for many years with Service Distributing and later for Propst Brothers Distributors. He was a member of Elwood Lane Free Will Baptist Church. Boyd was known for his love for music. He formed Boyd Wagoner and the Black Mountain Boys, and the group was heard on radio stations for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie Funderburk Wagoner; a son, Jerry Wagoner and wife, Linda, of Salisbury; a daughter, Pattie Edmiston and husband, Rock, of Kannapolis; four sisters, Louise Bost, Mary Linker, Ruby Wagoner and Betty Wingler, all of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Leslie Roscoe and husband, Adam of Enochville, Travis Edmiston and wife, Crystal, of Kannapolis; a step-grandson, Brent Dowell and wife, Audra, of Columbia, SC; and five great-grandchildren.
